Rising Damp usually occurs when unprotected porous materials such as bricks, blocks or stone mortars become into contact with damp materials. This can be earth or a structural material such as a concrete block or structure.
There are many visible and unviable symptoms associated with damp:
- Damp can be unsightly and causes damage to decoration, manifesting itself often as wavy lines along walls, peaking at corners.
- Damp often causes timber decay, particularly in older properties with unprotected timbers, or sub floor situations with poor ventilation.
- Damage can be caused to render plaster systems due to hygroscopic salt contamination. This is a salt that attracts moisture from the atmosphere.
- The moisture present often saturates the wall. This leaves higher conductivity of the walls, resulting in increased heat loss from the property.
- The whole damp situation created a very unhealthy environment. This can be put at risk due to the increase in fungal and mould growth spores.
- Damp can affect all unprotected walls this is irrespective of the age, construction or design if defects in the damp proof course exist.
